Ear Infections

Almost half of all children will suffer from at least one middle ear infection (Otitis Media) before they are a year old and two-thirds of them will have at least one episode by age three.

The symptoms of Otitis Media include ear pain, fever, irritability and neck pain usually on the side of the infection. Otitis Media is caused by either a viral or bacterial infection or frequently results from another illness such as a cold. For many children it can become a chronic problem and puts the child at risk or permanent hearing damage and associated speech and developmental problems.

Otitis Media commonly emerges in two circumstances:

  • There is improper drainage of the lymph system in the neck. This is caused by either a reduced or blocked drainage of the lymph vessels in the neck lymphatic chains that cause a build-up of fluid in the inner ear.
  • The Eustachian tube does not drain properly causing bacteria or viruses to enter the Eustachian tube. This is caused by either the muscle (WHERE?) to the Eustachian tube not working correctly or a loss of normal function of the small muscles at the opening of the Eustachian tube.

These can both be a problem in adults but are less likely to lead into an infection due to the length of the Eustachian tubes as well as the angle which allows easier drainage. Also, adults tend to spend more time upright than young children which encourages better drainage.

A natural approach for resolving the mechanical problem and restoring normal drainage of the ears and neck lymphatic is effectively done through chiropractic.

Most people have heard about the common practice of placing tubes in the ears to relieve the pressure and, therefore, the pain of Otitis Media. During the surgical procedure, a small opening is made in the eardrum and a small tube is placed in the opening. The opening helps to relieve this pressure in the ear and prevents fluid build-up. After a couple of months, the body pushes the tube out and the hole closes. Some children respond effectively, but it does not address the underlying cause of the infection which is the abnormal mechanical functions of the lymphatic, muscles and nerves.

If your child experiences recurrent ear infections it is important that you talk to your chiropractor. Doctors of chiropractic are licensed and trained to diagnose and treat patients of all ages and will use very gentle treatments for your child. By helping to restore the normal function of the tissues of the neck, Otitis Media can usually be significantly reduced or completely eliminated in most children without the use of antibiotics and surgery.
