Sciatica

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your the body. It runs from the lumbar spine to the pelvis, through the hip area and into the buttocks and down each leg. The sciatic nerve branches into smaller nerves as it travels down the legs providing sensation and muscle control to you thighs, legs and feet. The term sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of this nerve.

Sciatica is a sign that you have an underlying structural problem putting pressure on the sciatic nerve in your lower back. The most common cause of this nerve compression is a bulging or herniated lumbar disc. Subluxation or misalignment of the lumbar vertebra or pelvis can also be a very common cause. Muscle spasms such as the piriformis syndrome can compress directly on the sciatic nerve.

Signs of sciatica are pain that radiates to your buttock and down the back of your leg which can include the entire leg or can affect different areas along the nerve distribution. Sciatica may be accompanied by numbness or tingling to affected areas in the leg. The pain can vary widely from a mild ache to a sharp burning sensation or excruciating discomfort.

Sciatica can be treated with a combination of chiropractic manipulation, stretches or deep tissue massage. Changes in postural behavior can help to lessen the likelihood of recurring problems. If you are experiencing sciatica it is important to get examined and start treatment to help prevent further intensifying the problem as well as helping to speed up the healing process.
