What To Expect

Your First Visit

The first thing Dr. Heathcote will do is have a consultation with you about the health complaints about which you are primarily concerned. He will also want to discuss your family history, physical activities, dietary habits as well as what supplements you are taking. The doctor will want to know what other care you may have had (chiropractic, osteopathic, medical, etc.) and other questions designed to help determine the best treatment plan for you.

Chiropractic Patient Forms

We request that all new patients fill out our patient forms. The paperwork provides us with general information about you and your Consultation - please download and print the forms.

For Auto Accident or Personal Injury cases:

For our Nutrition Patients please also download and complete the following form:

After your patient forms are completed, you will have a consultation with the doctor to discuss your condition, concerns, and treatment options. The first visit is designed for the doctor to learn more about you, your overall health condition, and your expectations. A specific plan will be determined by Dr. Heathcote regarding your condition. There are three general phases of chiropractic care; Initial Intensive Care, Corrective Care and Wellness Care. (see below)

We are in network with many insurance companies. As a courtesy, the staff will perform a complimentary insurance benefits verification to help determine your insurance benefits. We also accept auto accident liens and workers compensation cases. To find out if your insurance covers chiropractic care, simply schedule a consultation at no cost and no obligation to you at 440-893-8800. We offer flexible and affordable payment programs for patients who have little or no insurance coverage.

The doctor will then complete a chiropractic examination checking your reflexes, your ability to turn and bend as well as other standard neurological, orthopedic, postural, and physical exams. Dr. Heathcote utilizes chiropractic care specializing in, applied kinesiology, and sports medicine. For more on applied kinesiology and sports medicine click on Our Techniques. The doctor will explain everything he does and how it can help you live a full, healthy life.

While we do not take x-rays in our office Dr. Heathcote may recommend them. If they are recommended, the patient may have the x-rays taken at any location desired. If you have recent previous x-rays bring them in so that Dr Heathcote may review them.

In our office we have various physical therapy options to help in your treatment process. The therapies include EMS (electric muscle stimulation) and moist heat or cryotherapy. These help to relax your muscles and reduce inflammation to compliment your adjustment. In addition to these we Aqua Massage table as well as stretching and strengthening exercises. We refer out for Physical Therapy and Therapeutic Massage as needed.

The goal of the chiropractic adjustment is to correct the spinal and extremity subluxations detected during the examination. To do that, the doctor applies pressure to the out of line joints to realign them in the proper mechanical position. This frees up the nerve compression allowing the body to heal properly.

Unfortunately, the muscles connected to subluxated vertebrae get used to their positions and have a tendency to pull the bone back out of place. It may take a number of adjustments before the body starts to hold the proper position. Read more.

Report of Findings

Upon your second visit, once the doctor has gotten to know your condition and health history, he will give you a report of findings (ROF). The ROF will report your treatment plan, the frequency of office visits, and the doctor's recommendations.

Three Types of Care

  1. Initial Intensive Care
If an ache, pain, or other obvious symptom has prompted you to begin chiropractic care, the first thing you want is to feel better. Depending on your age, condition, and lifestyle, repeated visits over weeks or months may be needed to reduce or eliminate your symptoms.
  2. Corrective Care
Muscle and other soft tissue damage often remain after your original symptoms have improved. Visit frequency is reduced and you may be encouraged to supplement your care with exercises or other self-care procedures. With your ache or pain gone, more complete healing can occur. Stopping care now may risk a relapse.
  3. Wellness Care
Wellness visits can detect and help correct new problems before they become serious.  Like other preventative measures, elective or wellness care can save time and money by helping you stay well.

Once your treatment plan has been determined by Dr. Heathcote, a Chiropractic Assistant will schedule your appointments for you. As an example, your treatment plan for your Initial phase may be 2 times per week for three weeks. The staff will work with you to schedule all the visits in the Initial Phase. If you are unable to keep the recommended schedule, the phase will last longer. At the end of the Initial Phase, a re-exam will be scheduled to determine what progress has been made and what the new treatment plan will be.

Treatment is interactive with you so you can express your questions and concerns. Your specific treatment plan will be explained by Dr. Heathcote. Depending on your age and issues there are many different adjusting techniques to help you achieve your goals regarding your health. We see patients of all ages as well as varying degrees of symptoms and adapt the adjusting protocols accordingly.
